On Assignment – The Popes Visit

I have just completed a week of filming for Reuters TV. I was not a part of the Pool camera crews but a team of Producers and Cameramen that were tasked with filming everything that happened around the televised visit. Tasks included GV’s, voxpops, interviews and the filming of any demonstrations that happened at each of the four main locations. With an emphasis on being on hand in case anything dramatic happened during the 4 day Papal Visit.

The footage here from both of these video clips contains mostly the Pool Footage from the TV Channels covering the main event, but a few of the shots at the end of each were taken by me and no matter how short the footage is its a great feeling that you have contributed to the news gathering effort at such a major news event.

Looks like some good interesting work – it’d be interesting to hear some comments and how you find working with video compared to stills. Do you miss being able to compose a definative single image or enjoy the scope moving images offer?

Moving Images definately give you scope to be creative in a completely different way to stills, it is easier using a set sequence to tell a story than it is to compose that all encompassing still image that encapsulates what is happening at any particular event. However, there are so many more elements to think about when it comes to composing several shots for a video sequence. Sound being one of the major things to get right, then you have wide shots, mid shots, close-ups and cut-aways, with interviews and voxpops. The two disciplines are completely different. but also have so much in common when it comes down to basic shot composure.
